Rope Trimmed Vanity Mirror

It feels great to be working my way through the list of “items to complete” to get this little bath finished. This is a simple project that can be completed in less than an hour! I love the texture of the rope trim and think it adds some extra interest to the room. It compliments well with the copper trim on the light fixture above.

 

Supplies
  • Round Mirror – I used a 14″ diameter one I found at Walmart. Ikea also carries round mirrors that are a little bit larger.
  • Sisal rope. I also found this at Walmart for $5. It was enough for both the mirror and a waste can for the bath.

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun

1. Cut the edge of the rope at an angle.

2. To stop the rope from fraying apply a small amount of hot glue into the fresh cut area and press the edges together.

3. Starting at the outside edge of the mirror begin to add glue. I used beads about a 1/4 inch apart and the size of small peas. Do only 3 – 4 inches at a time.

4. Press rope down on the outer edge till glue cools and hold. Be sure to place the rope so it just sticks out over the mirror edge to cover the mirror. You won’t want to see the mirror edge as your looking directly at the mirror.
5. Work your way around the mirror until about 6 inches from the beginning.
6. Measure and cut your rope to join/ end where it began. Then cut at an angle again and seal with a little glue as in step #1. Cut the angle a little at at time until it joins seamlessly with the beginning. In other words you made a big circle.
7. Follow the above steps 2 more times. Begin and end the circle at different places to minimize the appearance of the spliced ropes. If you are using a larger mirror you may want to increase the number of bands around the edge. See below seam where the beginning and end meet in the picture.

I love the finished look. The entire rope mirror as less than $25 to make.

I was on a rope roll and decided to make a rope waste basket for the bath as well. I used a small clear basket I also found at Walmart. For this project I started with the clipped end and tucked/glued it down at an angle so the first rope pass would cover the raw edge. Continue to wrap around until the last wrap. DO NOT glue the last wrap. Measure the wrap, clip the end so it lays flatter, tuck and glue the end first. Now go back and glue the last wrap securing it in place until you reach the end which has already been glued.

For a fraction of what it would cost in the department store you have a good looking custom mirror and waste basket. Besides isn’t it more fun to say, oh yeah, I made that when you get good comments!

      Kristin- Im glad you like my mirror project! It was easy to do. I found the round mirror at Walmart, it has a beveled edge and no frame it’s 20″ in diameter. I also saw the same mirror but a bit larger at Ikea. Let me know if you have any other questions, I’d be happy to assist :). Send me a pic of your finished mirror I’d love to post it.
