I’m truly excited to share my expert advice on home remodeling series with my readers. It’s one of the big reasons I started this blog; I felt I had so much knowledge to share. I have no problem thinking out of the box, opening up a wall or moving a doorway if it makes my small space more functional or adds space. I understand not everyone thinks like me 😉
Which is why I put together this series. My goal is to share how to manage a remodel and the steps to take so others can confidently and successfully tackle their own home projects.
It’s fun and rewarding 🙂 …I promise.
Over the next few weeks I’m going to share lots of good information. Information that will help you plan, make good decisions, save money and enjoy this awesome journey you are about to embark on.
What makes me qualified to write on this topic?
I’ll share something with you today that I haven’t shared before on my blog. I founded, owned and managed a successful property management and real estate company before I moved to Florida. My company managed hundreds of properties. Basically, over the last 12 years I’ve seen and fixed most types of common home issues. I’ve personally overseen dozens of home remodels, changed out flooring, put on new roofs, found leaks and trouble shooted a bunch of other crazy issues.
Which is why I had the confidence to tackle my own project house.
We picked out this project house when we choose to downsize. We’ve been remodeling since the day we moved in, two years ago. Now we’re in the middle of adding on a master bath, closet and a few other interior tweaks to help make the most of our wonderful small space. This will be the last big renovation in our bungalow. {huge sigh of happiness}
Tackling a remodel or a project house can be fun and rewarding. It can also be stressful, hard on a relationship and costly. If I were to guess, I’d say most people prefer to avoid any extra stress. Right?
Let me help you avoid extra stress.
Over the next several weeks, once a week, I’ll share everything you ever wanted to know about the process of remodeling and renovating. Step by step I’ll share using my own renovation project. By the time we’re done, I’ll have an ahmaaazing, (like, wait till you see this design amazing) new master bath and you’ll be ready to tackle your own masterpiece of a remodel!
Want a little peek at a few of my favorite remodeling topics I’ve got planned for this series?
Planing, research and timing are the starting points. Especially if it’s a big one like an addition. Permits, zoning, insurance, inspections, how to find out what you need. Don’t forget to think about things like your families schedule, vacations and holidays.
Budget saving ideas and tips any size job can use. Costs can run over and unexpected gotchas can crush a budget. There are lots of areas where can you save funds that won’t affect the quality of your project. I’ll share some awesome shopping secrets too! I saved so much off of the retail price on my stove that the savings paid for my dishwasher and my microwave when we were remodeling our kitchen 🙂
Who will be on your team? Are you hiring a contractor or doing it yourself? It’s important to make the right choices. Keep in mind, everything isn’t either – or. You probably have more options than you’d think.
Preparing to live through the chaos is smart and life still goes on during the process. Where will you sleep, will you have a kitchen or a much needed family bathroom? How will you work around the workers and the construction zone? Workers loose in your home? Dust and dirt flying through your vents? In my very humble opinion, preparation is the key to sanity during any remodel.
Conflict resolution, because no one likes a confrontation. Not happy with your vendors? Tips to help avoid your project going sideways and some helpful advice for getting your project back on track if it does.
I have some awesome sponsors for this project! I can’t wait to show you how we’ve teamed up to make my home remodel my favorite project of all time…
And, we’ve got an awesome giveaway in the near future that you won’t want to miss {wink}.

Hi Wendi!
I look forward to the weekly blog on your renovation insights!
We have done several over my life time and there are a few ‘tweaks’ we need to do on this house. Right now my husband is working on painting the livingroom (he did his office, my new sewing room, hall, entrance, and diningroom). I need to decide on a colour for the kitchen, but that will be in the fall.
The room that needs to have a total reno is the bathroom, actually both bathrooms….so hopefully now that we are emptynesters, would be great to start on one bathroom this winter. My dh does home renovations for clients (he has many that have a Honey Do List but with either no Honey or a not so handy Honey! LOL.) We both realize that it never hurts to gather more info and ideas from others who have ‘been there, done that’!
So together we will be reading your weekly home reno blog! Keep up the great blogging!
Jane!

Jane! I’m honored you’ll follow along with my series:) You are quite lucky to have a “Handy Honey”..LOVE your term of endearment.. I hope you don’t mind if I adopt it!! bathroom reno’s are my favorite rooms, there’s so many ways to add character in a small space.. besides, isn’t a pretty bathroom perfect for a relaxing bubble bath when it’s time to get away from it all?? Hope you enjoy the series as much as I will sharing it!

Hi Wendi!
I sure don’t mind you adopting “Handy Honey”!
My husband finished all of the painting for now! He left for the family cottage today for a work week! They are adding a bathroom on to the cabin! The cottage has a bathroom but the little cabin didn’t and Aunt Lorna likes to stay in it but doesn’t like the walk to the cottage to use the bathroom!
I was looking at our main bathroom this morning and know what I want to do but I think the whole tub and surround need to be taken care of too…..so will wait for the Honey to figure it out! So this week I will take the diningroom and living room bits and pieces out of my new sewing room and start creating my new creative space (between work, gardening and floating in the pool)!
Take care
Jane
