I tried like you wouldn’t believe, but I just couldn’t do it. I ditched my plan to make a classic Christmas wreath when I pictured how fun it would be to walk up to our front door and see this nautical sailboat Christmas wreath instead. So while I’m sharing yet again another coastal themed holiday project, it’s OK to picture anything you like stenciled on this JOY word holiday wreath! If you like traditional, you might like this Easy Fall Boxwood Wreath that can be changed up for Christmas or this DIY Rustic Garland that can be used for any season.
Wouldn’t this be fun with your favorite passion, sport or hobby stenciled over the letters?
My sailboat Christmas wreath was simple to make. I share affiliate links so you can easily find the products I used. I started with big cardboard letters, painted them and added this sailboat stencil randomly across the letters. The base was made with wide burlap ribbon. I folded over and hot glued the top and bottom of the burlap ribbon and edged it with sisal rope leaving the top open as a hanger.
Hot glue worked great to attach the letters and pine picks that I pulled apart and stuck in behind the letters in no particular order.
I found a few small pine cones and added them too.
I fell for this wire edged ribbon with jute stiching…had to have it! It complimented the burlap perfectly:)
All it needed was a little nautical flair to fit my wreath;) My handy sailboat stencil and about 10 minutes took care of that.
Being a sailor at heart, this sailboat Christmas wreath that spells JOY is perfect for us and our coastal holiday decor. Again, forgive me my obsession, unless it’s yours too;) , feel free to picture your own passion stenciled across this wreath made with letters if nautical isn’t your thing!

Treasure Island
Wendi says
Hi Neighboor! We LOVE Treasure Island. It’s way too fun to let the creativity overflow on projects, especially when they fit our locale! You understand that perfectly since you live here, and traditional holiday decor with snowmen doesn’t fit well. My guy is used to it and most of the time he just goes with the flow now LOL.. Happy Holidays & thank you so much for leaving a comment!

Amy @ Highstyle Restyle says
I love that you incorporated your coast theme into your wreath! It’s unique and charming and perfect accent to your sweet cottage!
Wendi says
Thanks so much Amy. It’s kind of challenging around here during the holidays because traditional Christmas colors aren’t used as much as up north. It turned out fun & I do like it though:)
DancingMooney says
Oh my gosh Wendi, this turned out SO cute!! Great thing you ditched your original plan, I love this!
Christy@Confessions of a Serial Do-it-Yourselfer says
I just don’t think it would be you if it wasn’t nautical! Such a cute wreath!! XO
Wendi says
Haha Christy, I think you are right! It’s tough decorating fr the holidays here, there isn’t a lot of tradtional colors or decor used…I guess it’s rubbing off on me!
Jenn & Vicki Fenton @ 2 Bees in a Pod says

Serena - Thrift Diving says
Is it just me or does it NOT feel like Christmas this year?? I think it’s the older I get–time goes so fast that it feels like I’m still in September :).
Okay, enough rambling– What a cute project, Wendi! So festive and not yet anotget boring round wreath. This is something I’d be inspired to do on my not-yet-decorated door! 🙂
Serena - Thrift Diving says
Ugh…iphone had a mind of it’s own. Ignore the typos. Lol
Wendi says
Serena… I FEEL your pain on the time flying. I’m looking at the calendar and can’t wrap my head around the idea that Chritmas is just a few weeks away! Yikes!! I had fun making this wreath because it was different! Happy Holidays!
Iris Nacole says

Wendi says
Hi Kim, Making a verticle wreath was new for me, but so much fun! I couldn’t find a nautical ribbon and I liked how the stenciled one turned out so much I added it to the letters too. Thanks so much for your visit:)
Patty says
Wendi your wreath is so adorable, love the nautical spin. I’m still trying to come up with something different for my front door this year, but I think I’m out of time so maybe next year, always next year right!
Wendi says
Oh Patty I feel your pain & thank you! I have maybe a few litte items out so far and need to get busy! My kids and grandson will be here on a few weeks and we are not looking very Christmasy this year! You are so right too.. next year is just fine!

I LOVE your nautical sailboat wreath Wendi and wouldn’t expect anything other than a wreath with nautical elements from you. Love the colors, love the sailboats, the bow – too stink’n adorable!
Wendi says
Thanks so much Marie:) I know I had to do the nautical, but I really couldn’t resist on this one! I don’t know why I didn’t think of it earlier!
Mary-the boondocks blog says
So very prety and it combines your love of the sea and Christmas. You know our tradition here was adding lights to little sailboats because we are known for our shipping industry . The addition of the Christmas tree was imported from northern Europe. So maybe you’re a secret greek sailor??
Wendi says
Oh my gosh Mary What a fun tradition! I hope you share that in a post! …And LOL on the secret Greek sailor, I am definately a sailor at heart. As I’m still swaying from being on my Dad’s boat for the last 5 days and now catchng up on work ..as always! LOL
Paula@SweetPea says
Your JOY wreath is absolutely perfect for your coastal cottage. It’s nice to see a wreath that isn’t the typical round shape. 🙂
Wendi says
Thank you Paula 🙂 I’ve only made about 3 wreaths..ever so this is still new to me! I liked trying something new and not round too:)
Susan says
