I’m sharing the 3 most common ways to stop door from hitting wall. I’ve used them all but one has worked the best for years and installs in seconds.
I have door bumps also known as door guards behind every door that opens against a wall in my house. They have saved me a lot of time and frustration in repairs. Today I want to share with you 3 ways to stop door from hitting wall and a quick little story.
When my girls were little and we lived in California…
We were renting a house that had enough room for both of my girls to have their own bedrooms. My girls have always been close, close in age and close together when they found themselves in creative hot water. I don’t remember the details of why, but they were sent to their rooms one afternoon for a”go to your room and think about what you did” moment.
A while later I heard giggling.
Hhmmnn, I thought I should check out the cause for giggles. And I did find the reason for the giggles. One of my girls had a hole in the drywall where the doorknob was repeatedly hitting the wall when the door was opened to hard. Over time the hole got bigger. I probably forget about fixing it or it was “on the list”.
I don’t know how they figured it out, but they did. One daughter made her hole larger and the other made a new hole in her wall. Yup, they created a little opening so they could see each other and talk back and forth. I smile as I write this now, but, I can assure you I was in no mood to smile when I discovered what they’d done!
You know the old saying, If I’d known then what I know?
I would have repaired the holes myself and would have made my girls do it with me so they’d learn more than one lesson! Closer to the truth is that it probably wouldn’t have happened in the first place. Which is why I’m sharing with you today 3 ways to stop door from hitting wall. So you won’t have to repair any door knob holes in your place either 🙂
There are several types but these are the ones most commonly used.
Stick on wall guard, aka door bump – This is my favorite and what we use in my house. They stick on the wall, last forever and work great. I like the soft round half circle ones. They also come in a flat hard plastic type.
Door stop mounted on the door hinge– I’ve used these before and for the most part they work great. Not as easy to install, but still simple. They are nice for aesthetics because they aren’t mounted on a wall. The down side is that bumper guard can put a hole in a hollow core door if it’s pushed hard enough. Since most interior doors are hollow core that can be an issue.
Spring and bumper– The most common type and in my opinion the least effective. They break and don’t last. If they aren’t present they can’t work.
As I mentioned, my favorite of the 3 ways to stop door from hitting wall is the stick-on bump by far. I’ve placed them behind every door that opens onto a wall here in this house.
To me, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure… or in this case a pound of drywall repair mud!
And yes, my front door is copper 🙂 See my tutorial on how I did it Here.

My favorite is the hinge mounted wall guards. They have a nice, intentional, classic, not tacky look. The people who lived in our house before we bought it used the flat stick on the wall things and I really didn’t like the way they looked, or the damage they did to the wall when removing them. These are all great tips though. Thanks for linking up at the #HomeMattersParty!

Hi Sarena, I like the hing mounted door stops the best too. But, the one big downside is they will poke a hole in a hollow core door if it’s opened too far. Otherwise they are great! Thanks so much for sharing your experience.

The previous owners of my house were nice enough to install spring bumpers… On the doors. Now I have doorknob and bumper holes, lol. I’ve never seen the sticky guards; I think I’ll try those when (if ever) I fix the holes, so they’ll cover my likely-to-be-horrible patch job. Thanks for the tips!
Wendi says
Jenny, I feel your pain! Sounds like you have double trouble with the added springs:( I lived with the bad patch job and thoses darn holes from knobs forever! Even though we don’t have the little ones around anymore, I still use them & they are still a wall saver! I’ve seen them in stores and of course online has the most varied selection. I’m glad this was helpful to you & thanks so much for your comment:)

Smart girls! I hope that my girls are that close as they grow up (although I’m sure there will be moments when their mischief making forces combined drive me nutty).
Wendi says
Jessica, I hope they are as well. They will surely drive you batty and at the same time to watch the friendship they have as they grow is one of the most beautiful things you’ll ever see. My girls are 26 & 28 and still as close.

I have girls and I can totally relate to this! Ha! It’s an adorable story and one I bet you guys enjoy at holiday dinners while reminiscing, but at the time ~ grrr ~ …I totally get it! My brother and I played a “lock each other out” game once. He took a running charge at the door, the moment I decided to open it. A giant doorknob hole was the result. I bet my mom wished she had one of your nifty ways to prevent that!! 😉

Kim…That’s so funny! I love childhood stories like ours. I’m sure your Mom was not too happy with how your “fun” game turned out! …and yes, they make the best conversations much later with the grown kids:) Thanks for visiting!

Great tips! I have 4 boys and little holes behind several of our doors. We had the hinge mounted guards behind two doors and, just like you said, they popped through and left a hole in the door. I’m definitely going to try the door bumps!
Wendi says
Amy, I had the same trouble with the hinge mounted ones. Patching a hole in a door is harder than patching a hole in the wall;( Try the bumps, you’ll love them! I don’t have little ones anymore but still keep them on the walls. Thanks so much for your visit!

Such a cute story – ingenious girls! We mounted the flat stick door guards behind our French door after getting tired of patching that wall. It works like a charm!

Marie, you know how smart and creative kids can be! Both of my girls texted me after I posted this story:) It was fun to look back on the memory. I think doors ought to come with door guards to put on a wall as soon as they are installed! They are such an easy fix to a big issue!!
