Happy first day of summer! Even though it’s been warm like summer here in Fl for a while, I still felt the need to make something summery. Most days when I’m working at my laptop I sit by the window and watch locals and tourists pass by on boats throughout the day. I was inspired to put together a nautical come sail away pillow tutorial for you guys today.
Changing out pillows and throws with seasonal colors is one of my favorite go-to for easy home decor updates. It’s easy if you just change out the pillow covers as the seasons change. Adding a little nautical decor is perfect for the summer season, don’t you think so?
DIY Come Sail Away Pillow Tutorial
Supplies needed to make a nautical come sail away pillow like mine. I use affiliate links to help you find the products I used. If you make a purchase I get a small commission at no cost to you. The affiliate money I earn helps cover the overhead costs of H2OBungalow. Thank you for your support!
- 18″ x 18″ zippered pillow cover
- 18″ x 18″ feather and down pillow insert
- nautical stencil with rope
- stencil brush
- iron on transfer paper for light fabric
- Decoart Fabric Paint in Indian Turquoise
- tape
- ruler
- paper towels
- iron
I made the Come Sail Away Graphic and printed it on iron on transfer paper just like in my DIY Canvas Starfish Beach Bag project. I share my designs and graphics with my subscribers for free.

I used a little Washi Tape as a guide for my rope stencil to keep my lines straight.
I also marked the center of the pillow form. I started stenciling from the outside in and joined the big nautical rope knot in the center. Stenciling is easy and I have several good tutorials like my Stenciling a Linen Scarf Project.
Let the paint dry and stuff the pillow form. Feather pillows are the best pillow insert in my opinion. Yes, they feel good but more importantly, you can chop the top to style them. Another big secret about feather pillows is they don’t slide down on leather sofas like foam-filled pillows do 🙂 Last they are much more comfortable.
My summer themed come sail away pillow project was easy peasy to make. Finding a place for it was tougher! Should I keep it where I can sit and read….
…or should I bring it to the couch?
I think I’m leaning towards the couch. I think it looks great with my DIY Live Edged Coffee Table and my Upcycled Bed Spindle Candle Holders. What do you think?
Would you make a nautical come sail away pillow for your summer decor or would my sweet Bumble Bee Graphic, fit your style better? Either one is a great project to welcome the season change!
Love the idea of adding nautical themed pillows and decor but have no time to DIY?
I found a few nautical themed pillows on Amazon that are darling.
…and several beautiful nautical pillows in my favorite colors on Wayfair.

Very pretty! What I’d do to “sail away” from our summertime heat! I haven’t used iron on transfer paper in a while but I too have a pillow in need of something. Visiting frmo Merry Monday.

OK did I send you a request by telepathy? When I first started blogging my home did not reflect my surroundings at all. But slowly with your subtle influence it has started to look like a nautical home. Lots more blue and touches of the sailor/fisherman here and there.

You must have sent me a special message for summer! I love that I’ve helped influence your home in color and spirit. What a beautiful compliment you’ve just shared with me. Thank you, you made my day. I can’t think of a more perfect place to see blues and calming sea colors with nautical touches either!
