No self-respecting beach bungalow would be without some type of art on its exterior walls. Today I’m going to show you how to easily hang outdoor wall decor without nails or tools on stucco, siding or almost any flat vertical surface.
This is a 10 minute project friends!
One of the things I’ve loved about our area from the start is how each house takes on its own personality. We have big houses, little houses, old houses redone and shacks that need to be redone in our area 😉 The one thing you are likely to find on every home regardless of age or size is some type of beachy wall art.
This is especially true of houses on the water.
These little turtles have been in my garage for two+ years, my daughter helped me pick them out. I’ve always known where they’d go, I just needed the motivation to get it done.
Let me share with you how easy it is to hang exterior wall art or outdoor decor on stucco, siding or almost any outdoor flat surface.
Choices to hang outdoor wall decor without nails or tools
I’ve updated the list below to include hanging wall art on brick, vinyl siding or stucco without using nails or damaging the walls thanks to a few generous readers who’ve shared their know-how:)
- 3M Exterior Command Hooks
- 3M Exterior Double Sided Tape good for up to 5lbs
- Brick Clips – if you have brick
- Vinyl Siding Hooks
- scissors
- TSP (Tri-sodium phosphate), or rubbing alcohol
- lint free rag
Clean surfaces before hanging outdoor wall decor if you are using a product that sticks to the wall
Clean the area where you’ll hang your outdoor art with TSP or rubbing alcohol. If you’re mounting outside art or decor flat on the wall, wipe the surface that will come in contact with the exterior wall. Let dry.
Cut exterior double sided tape to fit
This double sided tape holds up to 5lbs. The amount of exterior double sided mounting tape I used is probably overkill, but with gusty winds that can reach 45 mph I wanted my art to stay secure on the wall.
Peel and stick double sided sticky tape
Peel off the back and press your outdoor wall art firmly in place. I held my pieces down and put my weight into pressing to be sure I had a good seal.
Viola!
My outdoor wall art is hung, and in 10 minutes!
I’d have to say our little backyard is starting to shape up!
That planter is my Key West DIY Wood Planter Box project and I made the DIY Coastal Rope Garden Border last week.
See how simple it was to hang outdoor art without nails? I promised you a 10 minute project!
Just like when you are decorating the inside of your house with wall art to add interest, the outside of your home can benefit from a little detail too. Outdoor wall decor helps define your space and helps an outdoor space feel cozy.
This is project # 3 of my 30 Days To Fabulous Backyard Makeover.
I’m loving that we have two choices to hang outdoor art on exterior walls without tools or nails.

I just saw you yesterday on UTube. Telling us how to put up lights and what kind to get. And I believe I will be doing the rope and wood for the sides of the walkway to the pool and non istance patio as of yet. You always make me smile when I see your new things. You and Anna White.
ENJOY your vacation. You deserve it.
Wendi says
Hi Jody!
Rope and 4 x 4’s are a good way to line your walkways! They look great and don’t cost too much! I’d say an absolute yes to the string lights for your pool too. They would be magical there! Thanks for your sweet comment, I always enjoy your notes! …yes, the vacation and break has been wonderful!

Hi I love this idea to mount to stucco without nails as I am a renter and want to avoid damage as much as possible. However, I thought all those exterior double stick tape products were “permanent”? Do you know how to remove the decor/tape without damaging the stucco or leaving behind the tape?
Wendi says
Hi Liz! That’s a very good question. If you gently pry it off starting on a corner. It will come off. Use something like a hard plastic paint scraper or spatula. I haven’t had any residue left behind but if you do use Goo Gone and you will remove it. Good luck and I’m glad you found my post helpful!
Katrina says
Hi Wendi!
Do you happen to know if removal of the decoration will damage the stucco? Specifically with the double sided tape? I’m going to look into the outdoor command hooks but it gets pretty windy where we are so the double sided tape would be a huge bonus if it doesn’t cause any damage! Thanks for the great ideas.
Wendi says
Hi Katrina, I don’t think it will damage the stucco. It hasn’t on mine. After 2 years and when it was crazy hot here I finally had one turtle come loose and there were no marks on the stucco. I just had to reattach it with new tape and it’s been good ever since. I hope that helps!
Millie Hue says
The turtle wall decoration is awesome, and I am grateful for your tip on how to hang an ornament even if it doesn’t have anything in to put a nail or hook on. One of my frustrations is when I want a specific decoration to be on my wall, but, sadly, it is only made for the table. Now, I could go ahead and buy any item I want and just stick it on the wall with a sticky tape.
Wendi says
Hi Millie! The double sided tape is a huge game changer! If you put it on correctly it stays too. Those turtles made it through the hurricane last year here in FL. Thanks so much for your note and visit!

I have some cocopelle’s to hang on my outside stucco wall . I was wondering if the double-sided tape would work for me.
Wendi says
Hi Frank,
I’m not sure what a cocopelle is. If it is within the weight limit of the tape and has a good flat surface to adhere to I would say it’s worth a try. Also, I always use more tape than the package suggests. Good luck and thanks for visiting.

LOvely turtles and creative idea how to hang them. But now winter is coming.. sad. I miss summer. Anyway I want to ask a little bit out of topic. What about window treatment like unique roller blinds or something like that. I think it’s a good decor idea in cold season. What do you think? I want something outstanding, unique, stunning. Maybe you have some thought?
Wendi says
Hi Klere, I completely understand how sad it can be when summer rolls by and winter with shorter days arrive. Decorative roller blinds can be a great idea. I’ve also spruced up my vertical blinds with success. You can see them here https://h2obungalow.com/how-to-stencil-vertical-blinds/ Planning window decor is fun, enjoy!
Carol ("Mimi") says
I had never heard about “exterior” double-sided tape and command hooks. Thanks for the information!
Wendi says
Hi Carol! Oh my gosh they are the best! I wish I’d known about it earlier. It’s so much easier to decorate outside now. Thanks so much for your visit and have fun using the double-sided tape in a project!

Great ideas ! nice article thanks for sharing…………..
Wendi says
Hi and you’re welcome. I’ve made good use of this tape since I discovered it for outdoor hanging projects!
Elizabeth says
Love the idea of not using nails…Could you tell me the name of the plant in small blue pot.have had the same plant for over 20 yrs never new the name of it and have never found one at any nursery or any other place. Thanks!!
Wendi says
Hi Elizabeth! Oh how funny, the moment I read your description of the pot I knew which one you were talking about! The funny thing is I’m not sure where it came from. I’ve had it for years too. When I try to make it part of my potted plant collection, water and take care of it…it starts to die. Every time. Then I throw it on the side of the house and ignore it completely and it flourishes. I’ve left it next to the white planter under the turtles and don’t do anything with it and it seems to be happy there. I’ll post a picture of it on My H2OBungalow Facebook page and ask my readers. I have several good plant people as followers. I’ll let you know what they come back with. Thanks so much for your visit!

I’m always amazed with your creativity & how to skills.
Any chance you’d consider a house swap?
Lynda
Wendi says
Hi Lynda & thank you so much! Such a nice compliment, you made my day {big smile}! On the house swap… hmm, I’d have to think about that one;) How about I keep sharing cool ideas you can do on your house too? I’m excited to share my next project for the backyard. Watch for it tomorrow! Thanks so much for stopping by!
Marie, The Interior Frugalista says
Hmmm, I have some pieces I’ve been wanting to hang from our vinyl siding but didn’t want to puncture holes in the siding. I wonder if this product would withstand our brutal Canadian winters. Love your metal turtles – they look great on your house!
Wendi says
Hi Marie:) This would work! One of my readers also left a note with a product she uses make for siding. Wish I’d known about that one in my old house! Hugs & thanks for your visit!
Patty says
I have been wondering if that two sided tape would work outside, my home is brick so if it worked on your stucco I feel certain it will stick on brick. I have two peacocks that are just gorgeous that I bought about eight years ago, but didn’t want to hang until we got the patio covered, we got the patio covered five years ago, but have been waiting until I could find a way to hang them without drilling into the brick. Thanks so much, I’m going to get some tape now and hang my handsome peacocks.
Wendi says
Hi Patty! I just updated the post with a link for the coolest hook that works on brick, no tools and easy to remove! Another reader shared her secret of vinyl siding hooks so I thought I’d do a search to see if I could find specialty brick hooks. I’ve updated the post with both types of hooks. I love that my readers inspire me to learn too:) Thanks so much for stopping by & your note:) Let me know if you use the Brick Clips and how you like them!
Patty says
Thanks so much Wendi. I placed my order, can’t wait to get them.
Wendi says
You’re welcome! Did you order the clips for bricks? I thought that was the smartest product I’d ever seen! Wish I’d had those for my house in TX! Share a picture when you hang your art!

What a smart idea. I also have lots that I’d like to put on my balcony but with the wind gusts, it is just not possible. I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled tor this product Wendi.
Wendi says
Hi Mary 🙂 I’ll bet this will work for you too. You can also find double sided sticky tape that will hold up to 50 lbs. I’ve used it for other purposes and it really holds well. I know you would find some awesome way of decorating your outdoor area with it! Thanks so much for stopping by!

It’s always nice to find another way of doing things. I’m still focused on plants, but eventually would like to add some wall art. I replaced the siding on my house about 10 years ago and I still hate the idea of putting holes in it.
Wendi says
Hi Vanessa, As soon as I read this, I thought about how to mount a planter on the wall! I completely understand about putting hole in your siding. I wouldn’t want to do that either! Thanks for stopping by:)
Debby says
There are hooks that you can use to hang on siding without nails. They slide under the vinyl siding. Creative Vinyl Products is the company.
Wendi says
Hi Debby and thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of the vinyl siding clips:) I’ve updated my post with that info as well as shared it with another reader already:) I love when I learn from my readers. I appreciate you taking the time to leave a note!
